A.Function of a clamp: Becomes a functional part of the Seal between hose and fitting. All three are important in providing a no-leak assembly. (Air, water, oil, fluids)

1. Select the right clamp:

-Need to know the Diameter of hose with adequate allowance for the fitting "Bead effect" on the hose diameter.(Expansion).

-Correct band width. Wider is not always better.

-Consider corrosion and appropriate steel. 200SS vs 316SS.

-Thermal and mechanical loads. Heat expands and cold contracts the hose diameter.

Loads(change in PSI) are typically from air, oil or water or atmosphere. Engineers in specific industries usually specify steel types.

B.Assembly of a clamp:

-Place clamp generally in the middle of joint.

-Place clamp perpendicular to the joint.

-Tighten the screw as slow as possible. Over tightening is common problem. Using power drivers like battery powered drills can also cause major clamp and sealing difficulties.

-Do not exceed recommended installation torque, never ultimate torque.

-Wait 5/10 minutes and re-tighten.

-Place clamp on inward side of bead.

-Silicone hose. Never use a worm drive clamp. Always use EB or TSS or DB type something friendly to soft hose.
